Kateryna's Success Story

Kateryna, originally from Ukraine, arrived in Canada in early 2023 with her husband and two-year-old child. She left her employment to flee the Russian-Ukrainian war in her home country. Although they found safety in Canada, she had been unemployed for over five months. Even with Kateryna’s vast background in urban planning and architecture, her credentials were not being recognized in Canada. So, her primary barrier was finding out if she could still work in her field of expertise. As she was new to Canada, she was also having trouble adapting to the Canadian job market and application process.

“I proud that I could find a job, according to my profession, in new country for the first several months.”

Coming to Calgary Career Hub, Kateryna knew her employment goal was to work in her field of expertise, even at an entry level. Her secondary goal was to upgrade her skills so that she could eventually work at the level she had back in the Ukraine. Her Career Advisor helped her explore the different pathways to upgrading her credentials to Canadian equivalencies. She underwent extensive work on her resume and interview preparation and then she was referred to Job Placement. Her Career Advisor knew that having added support would help her in advocating for her talent and ability to any potential employer.

I think all my achievements made an impact on my life. I am learning new information, programs, and languages all my life and I will continue this process and, of course, it will improve my life from all sides.”

Kateryna was encouraged to continue to explore the requirements of an Urban Planner in Canada and was applying to different positions to obtain employment. She even applied to entry level positions so that she could gain Canadian experience in her field. Although she was clearly worried and afraid, being in a new country with her family, with continued encouragement from her Career Advisor and Job Developer, Kateryna remained confident. She submitted her resume to job postings where she felt her skills would be an asset. Her dedication paid off, as it helped her interview positively and with confidence. She identified her abilities to meet the needs of the employer and the organization. Kateryna is now employed as a Planner 1 for the Town of Strathmore.
